World class wines are far and few between and even at a wine festival with so many good wines, this one stands out from the crowd. Two friends, Bruwer Raats and Mzokhona Mvembe, the first winner of the Indaba Scholarship that let him go to Stellenbosch University to study winemaking, produced this beautiful red blend, MR De Compostella 2011. They met at Delaire Winery some years ago and became friends, and decided to create a consistent top quality wine with no constraints of style, varietal or tradition.
MR, which received a 95 rating from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, has a delicious nose of berries, oak, sandalwood and cedar. Parker compares the wine to the “purring of a Rolls Royce engine.”
The grapes are selected with great care Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. The retail price is around $65 and the value is definitely there. The winemakers’ goal was to create a wine that was greater than the sum of its parts, and with MR, they achieved it. Go to Cape Classics for more information.
