What’s Brewin’

Summer is a great time to explore what’s new in the constantly changing world of craft beers these days. We’d like to introduce you to four brews we discovered recently, each different and interesting in its own way:

  • Silver City Brewery Luminous Libation – This is a Belgian-style Tripel that ‘inherited’ some interesting characteristics from the Chardonnay barrels it has resided  in, the brewers point out. It’s from Bremerton, WA and is described as “a barrel aged interpretation of a Trappist monk’s dream beer.” It’s 9 percent ABV with Mount Hood and Saaz hops and is only available from April through May.
  • Maui Express Coconut India Pale Ale – This seasonal summer brew is 6.60 percent ABV, says Denver Beer Company which uses Mosaic and Citra hops with shredded coconut. It won a Bronze Medal at the U.S. Open Beer Competition this year.
  • Almanac Beer Co. – Tropical Galaxy – “Proudly brewed” in California, this brew comes from a brewery that’s opening a new brewery and barrel house this Fall on Alameda Island at the site of a former Naval base, Founders Jesse Friedman and Damian Fagan point out. Tropical Galaxy is a dry hopped sour farmhouse ale that’s aged in oak barrels with mango, lime and shredded coconut.
  • Australian Brewery – All the way from Australia’s New South Wales comes Saison D’Hérétique with its complex yeastiness and floral hoppy character. Made in Australia, the hops include Ella, Summer, Helga, Cascade and Topaz. It has no additives or preservatives and is described by the brewers as “Real craft beer with heresy”! Check it out.
