BOSTON – At a recent trade tasting, Vino Nobile de Montepulciano introduced a selection of outstanding recent vintages. One of our favorites out of the group of nine producers was La Ciarliana which presented three beautiful Tuscan Montepulcianos from 2010, 2013 and 2014 vintages. Well structured, they included Vino Nobile de Montepulciano 2013, with 95% Sangiovese and 5% Mammolo, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Vigna Scianello, 2010, made with 100% Sangiovese and Rosso di Montepulciano 2014, with 80% Sangiovese, 10% Canailo and 10% Merlot.
Rich in flavor, fruit forward and elegant, these wines are made by the family-owned winery originally begun by owner Louis Frangiosa’s grandfather. Alas, they are currently seeking an importer. We urge importers to seek out the wines and consider bringing them into the U.S.
Over the last decade, producers in Vino Nobile have invested more than eight million Euros in environmental sustainability projects. More than 250 vintners take part in farming the Vino Nobile vineyards and employ an estimated 1,000 workers permanently, plus that many seasonal workers as well. Last year, seven million domestic bottles of Vino Nobile and 2.5 million of Rosso di Montepulciano DOC were offered on the market. The U.S. market is responsible for an estimated 21% share of Nobile export sales. We enjoyed these wines and look forward to learning and writing more about them in the months ahead.
Ferrari, Italy’s leading sparkling wine, was honored at the Producer of the Year at the 2015 Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships 2015. Making wine in the northern region of Italy’s Trentino for more than a century, this winemaker’s Blanc de Blanc wines are produced exclusively from 100 percent Chardonnay grapes that are cultivated in the foothills of the Alps.
Family owned, Ferrari is led today by Marcello Lunelli. This wine displays great structure and elegance. A Blanc de Blanc, it is sourced from family vineyards that surround the historic Villa Margon. It’s aged in Austrian oak casks and has a deep yellow color with gold highlights. There are aromas of smoke, ash, and Meyer lemon, among others, and a palate of pear, apple, clove and lemon curd as well. The wine is aged for seven years on the lees. Marchese Fumanelli has been making wines in Italy’s Valpolicella region since 1470. This lovely white is distinctive with its blend of 50 percent Garganega and 50 percent Trebbiano Toscana. Golden green in color, it delivers an elegant balance of fruit and minerality with a nose of white acacia blossoms and honey. We loved it for its distinctiveness and notes of fresh apricot, apple, mint and eucalyptus. Totally different from other whites,it delivers a unique experience that we found captivating. The wine is 13% ABV. The wines are imported by Pasternak Imports in the U.S.
Since 1470, Marchesi Fumananlli, in the heart of Valpolicella, Italy, has been making wines. This 2010 Squarano is an elegant, mature and complex wine with a deep ruby red color, made from 40% Corvina, 40% Corvinone and 20% Rondinella grapes. Well structured, with fine tannins, it offers ripe fruit – cherries and blackberries – with notes of cedar, spice and licorice. 30 to 40-year-old pergola and 8 to 10-year-old guyot vines are harvested on this 78 acre historic estate.

Marchese Fumanelli in Verona, Italy dates way back to the 14th century and has been making wines since the 17th century when the Marquis Fumanelli family built the estate which stands today in the hear of Valpolicella on Roman ruins.
Today, those wines are now distributed by Pasternak Wine Imports in the U.S. and include this delicious, rich Amarone 2008.
It blends Cortavina (40%), Corvinone (40%) and Rondinella (20%).The wines grown in the traditional Veronese Pergola system, grown and placed on plateaux where they rest for 120 days before drying. They’re de-stemmed and soft pressed and macerated for 25 days, then fermented in stainless steel tanks. The resulting wine is a deep red with vanilla notes and hints of nutmeg along with berry flavors. It’s a rich and well balanced wine that goes well with steaks and aged cheeses, as well as making a deeply flavorful beverage all by itself. As summer turns to fall and the days turn cooler, this is a wine to sip and savor.
A deep ruby red wine from Italy, Carlo Giacosa‘s Lina, from a fourth generation winery that blends traditional methods with new techniques, offers deep, jammy scents and flavors. Well structured, the lightness of Barbera is tempered. This is a full bodied wine with good tannins and a warm and lingering finish.
The Barbera is aged in small French oak barrels for the first 10 months, followed by two months in stainless steel containers. Sulfites are reduced to one-third the legal limit.

Italy’s Trento is south of Alto Adige, a central Alpine region of the country,where Cantine Ferrari is producing gorgeous sparkling wines from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Blanc.The winery dates to 1902 and today, is known for its wide range of signature, estate-grown and Riserva Lunelli (new) wines as well as what is said to be Italy’s most awarded cuvee, Giulio Ferrari.
Bubbles are always delicious and perhaps even more so when they’re pink! The Ferrari rosé is a highly accessible rosé that is made from a premium blend of 60 percent Pinot Nero (vinified as a rosé) and 40 percent Chardonnay. It’s 12.5 percent alcohol by volume. The first vintage was made in 1969.
Elegant and fragrant, the wine is dry and refined with a lingering finish.
