Wine of the Week – Marchese Fumanelli Amarone 2008

Marchese Fumanelli in Verona, Italy dates way back to the 14th century and has been making wines since the 17th century when the Marquis Fumanelli family built the estate which stands today in the hear of Valpolicella on Roman ruins.
Today, those wines are now distributed by Pasternak Wine Imports in the U.S. and include this delicious, rich Amarone 2008.
It blends Cortavina (40%), Corvinone (40%) and Rondinella (20%).The wines grown in the traditional Veronese Pergola system, grown and placed on plateaux where they rest for 120 days before drying. They’re de-stemmed and soft pressed and macerated for 25 days, then fermented in stainless steel tanks. The resulting wine is a deep red with vanilla notes and hints of nutmeg along with berry flavors. It’s a rich and well balanced wine that goes well with steaks and aged cheeses, as well as making a deeply flavorful beverage all by itself. As summer turns to fall and the days turn cooler, this is a wine to sip and savor.

Wine of the Week – Dashwood Sauvignon Blanc, 2013

Summer’s winding down but we still crave the crisp whites that cool us on hot, sultry days. The Dashwood Sauvignon Blanc 2013 from New Zealand reached out and grabbed our attention this week with its beautiful combination of flavors from guava, lemongrass and grapefruit to tropical fruits with a lingering finish. “Bright” describes this wine well but so do “crisp,” “dry” and “fruit forward.” It contains 12.5% ABV, is moderately priced and offers good value to diners and restaurateurs alike.

Wine of the Week – Domaine de la Perriere Sancerre, 2013

Summer’s the time for crisp white wines and this lovely Domaine de la Perriere Sancerre 2013 from Saget La Perriere is an outstanding way to celebrate the season. It’s from the Loire Valley in France where the family-owned winery is now in its ninth generation.
You’ll think of summer flowers as you sip this Sauvignon Blanc with its minerality, hints of citrus fruits and bright golden hue. This is a wine that pairs well with seafood and shellfish, but also makes a marvelous glass by itself. The grapes are harvested by hand and mechanically each fall.
The caves of La Perriere were carved 200 million years ago and provide the perfect spot to age the wines from the estate’s 106 acres. This Sancerre is 12.5 ABV.
