Happy Earth Day!

BOSTON – We in Boston are fortunate to have many foodservice and lodging operations that are interested in being green, sustainable and earth-friendly.

We celebrate them this Earth Day and want to honor, in particular, the Seaport Hotel, which early on, created an area on its rooftop for bees. This year, Vice President and General Manager Jim Carmody tells us, they decided to add two new raised planters on the fifth floor roof where the bee hives are located. “We are fortunate to be surrounded by two-plus acres of green space, so our bees have always had plenty of plants and flowers to pollinate.”
This Spring, he adds, “we are planting carrots, gourds, tomatoes and cucumbers which we’ll be using in our team members’ cafeteria. We believe the bees will enjoy having new plants to pollinate, and, so close to home!”
The Seaport Hotel’s waste is collected bi-weekly by Maine-based Exeter Agri-Energy and the food waste is made into compost, Carmody explains. Exeter Agri-Energy will bring the hotel the compost from the food waste to use in the new planters.
